**CHUID + VIS Authentication** – The system verifies the PIV Card Holder Unique Identifier (CHUID) signature to ensure card authenticity and integrity. While CHUID is transmitted unsecured due to its “free read” nature, visual inspection (VIS) serves as an additional security layer to identify counterfeit or altered cards.
**CAK Authentication** – Full duplex pivCLASS readers, working with PAM, perform PKI challenge-response tests alongside signature verification, ensuring the card authentication key (CAK) is secure. This method protects against the risks posed by counterfeit, altered, copied, or cloned cards. Half duplex readers support the OSDP protocol for half duplex authentication.
