Description
Data centers and IT infrastructure are advancing rapidly to accommodate the surge in connectivity and digital transformation. The swift development of hybrid IT environments, encompassing data centers, cloud services, and edge computing installations, is necessitating enhanced monitoring and management of increasingly complex data center infrastructure. Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) solutions were developed to address these needs with advanced software that monitors, measures, and manages data centers and IT equipment, along with supporting infrastructure such as power and cooling systems. Over the years, DCIM software has evolved significantly, adapting to the explosive growth in data usage and server consolidation within data centers. Crucial features have been integrated to support aspects like IT space planning and to meet power and cooling requirements. Concerns about data center efficiency led to the creation of a new metric, Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), which expanded DCIM’s capabilities beyond just monitoring and management, to include planning and modeling functionalities as well.
