Description
The landscape of data centers and IT infrastructure is rapidly evolving in response to heightened connectivity and the push for digital transformation. The swift evolution of hybrid IT—comprising data centers, cloud, and edge computing installations—necessitates the monitoring and management of increasingly complex and dynamic data center infrastructure. Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) solutions were developed to address these challenges, offering advanced software designed to oversee, evaluate, and optimize data centers, IT equipment, and associated support systems like power and cooling. Over time, DCIM tools have advanced significantly to accommodate the rapid surge in data consumption and server consolidation within data centers. Essential features have been incorporated to enhance IT space planning and address power and cooling needs. Growing concerns about data center efficiency led to the development of a new performance metric, Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), broadening DCIM’s capabilities from mere monitoring and management to include strategic planning and modeling.
